- Dar consejos con If I were you…
- Expresar arrepentimiento y deseos con I wish.
| Tipo | Situación | If + … | Resultado |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zero | Verdades generales, siempre pasa | presente | presente |
| First | Futuro posible y real | presente | will + infinitivo |
| Third | Pasado que no ocurrió (imposible de cambiar) | had + participio | would have + participio |
Si empiezas con if, pon coma: If it rains, we'll stay home. / We'll stay home if it rains.
Zero conditional: lo que siempre pasa
- If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.
- If I drink coffee at night, I can't sleep.
- If a client pays late, the system sends a reminder.
Aquí if equivale casi a when (cada vez que).
First conditional: futuro real
- If you sign today, we'll give you a 10% discount.
- If it doesn't rain, we'll have the event outside.
- I'll call you if I have any questions.
Recuerda la regla de la lección 7: después de if no va will. Nunca "If you will sign today…".
1. "If we ___ the deadline, the client will be upset."
First conditional: if + presente, resultado con will. → If we miss.
- If I had more time, I would learn to play the guitar. (no tengo tiempo)
- If I won the lottery, I'd travel around the world.
- What would you do if you lost your job?
If I were you: el consejo elegante
Con to be, en el second conditional se usa were para todas las personas, especialmente en registro formal:
- If I were you, I would accept the offer. — Yo que tú, aceptaría la oferta.
- If she were here, she'd know what to do.
2. "If I ___ rich, I would buy a house by the beach."
Second conditional con to be: If I were (también se oye was en conversación informal).
3. ¿Cuál es la diferencia? (a) "If I get the job, I'll move to Madrid." (b) "If I got the job, I'd move to Madrid."
- If we had launched earlier, we would have sold more. (no lanzamos antes)
- If I had known about the meeting, I would have come.
- She wouldn't have missed the flight if she had left earlier.
Al hablar, se contrae mucho: If I'd known, I would've come. Ojo: I'd puede ser I had o I would; el contexto lo aclara.
"If I would have known…" es incorrecto en inglés estándar. En la parte del if va had + participio: If I had known.
4. "If you ___ me, I would have helped you."
Third conditional: If + had + participio, resultado con would have.
Unless, as long as, in case
- unless = si no / a menos que: We won't finish on time unless we hire more people.
- as long as / provided that = siempre que: You can work from home as long as you meet your targets.
- in case = por si: Take an umbrella in case it rains.
I wish e if only: deseos y arrepentimientos
- Deseo sobre el presente (pasado simple): I wish I spoke English fluently.
- Arrepentimiento sobre el pasado (had + participio): I wish I had studied harder.
- Queja sobre algo que molesta (would): I wish you would stop interrupting.
- Responde: What would you do if you could change careers? en 3 frases.
If you buy 100 units, we'll include free shipping. If you pay in advance, we'll give you an extra 5%. We can't lower the price unless you sign a one-year contract.
If I could change careers, I would become a data analyst. I'd study Python and I'd look for a remote job.
If I had started learning English at school, I would have applied for that scholarship. I wish I had taken it more seriously.
Resumen
- Zero: presente + presente (siempre). First: presente + will (real).
- Second: pasado + would (hipotético); If I were you… para aconsejar.
- Third: had + participio + would have + participio (pasado irreal).
- unless = a menos que; I wish + pasado / pasado perfecto.
